A small business marketing coach

Marketing isn’t just a “nice to have”, it’s an essential part of any successful business

One of the four pillars of business, along with management, operations and finance, marketing has changed dramatically over the past decade – particularly for the new breed of solo business which wasn’t around ten years ago – and it’s unlikely to go away or to stop evolving any time soon.

In the same way that you’d ask an accountant for advice on financial matters relating to your business, it makes sense to establish a relationship with a marketing expert so that you can do the same there.

Who needs a marketing coach?

Anybody who wants to grow a business.

Of all the roles that a small or solo business owner has to assume – management, marketing, operations and finance – the one that seems to cause the most number of people the greatest amount of trouble is marketing.

Not because it’s difficult, but because it’s subjective. And because there are no right or wrong ways to do all the little things that add up to the collective of marketing including branding, content creation, social media management, web design, email marketing, SEO and more.

The problem is compounded in two ways.

The sheer number of marketing tools and marketing experts out there which/who claim that their tool or method is the right choice for you is enough to paralyse anyone into inertia.

If a business owner had access to an experienced, impartial expert to ask for advice and an actionable plan of attack, they could moving in the right direction.

Loss of control

Business owners are encouraged to delegate, but when they’re delegating tasks in an area they’re unfamiliar with, like marketing, and they get someone outside their business to, for example, manage their social media or build them a website, when the relationship with that person ends, the business owner can find themselves unable to log into their website or losing all the graphics and content that went into their social media posts.

If the business owner knew upfront how to delegate while retaining control, they wouldn’t have to learn so many expensive lessons.

What does a marketing coach do?

A marketing coach acts as a voice of reason to support a potentially overwhelmed small or solo business owner with a particular decision, stage of business or project.

By giving advice, answering questions, challenging opinions, summing up, identifying patterns, guiding through reason and logic, and offering accountability.

A marketing coach understands the objectives of marketing and is able to empathise with the challenges that a small or solo business owner is likely to face along the way, while recommending strategies for overcoming those challenges.

They will have worked with a range of marketing tools and marketing methods relevant to a small or solo business over the years and be interested in being part of the business owner’s journey.

Do you need a marketing coach?

You might need a marketing coach if two or more of these things apply to you:

  • You are starting or attempting to grow a business
  • You have no relevant marketing experience
  • You feel uncomfortable about being the face of your business
  • You keep procrastinating
  • You feel overwhelmed
  • You need clients for your business
  • You don’t know where to start

Why choose me?

I’ve spent the last ten years helping solo and small business owners cast a big shadow using cost-effective, high-impact tools and strategies and a healthy dose of common sense.

What I know isn’t just theoretical, it’s trial-and-error practical, real-world experience. For businesses ranging in size and complexity from modest one-person businesses to local governments and not-for-profits.

The filter that I apply to each question is whether or how an action will lead to money in the bank, now or in the future. If a business isn’t profitable, it’s not a business, it’s an expensive hobby and my background in finance makes me look at marketing a little differently from most people.

The nature of business and marketing is changing and if you’d like an accessible, expert small business marketing specialist to be on your team, then stop procrastinating and take the first step.
